Western Sydney school holidays: a parent's guide.

Two weeks is a long time when everyone is home and the weather cannot make up its mind. Here is how to plan the spring break across Western Sydney, and how to cater a holiday party without cooking.

The dates, confirmed

Spring holidays 2026

NSW spring school holidays run from Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October 2026. Term 3 ends on Friday 25 September and Term 4 starts on Tuesday 13 October.

Independent and private schools vary, and some take a longer break or start earlier, so check your school's calendar before you lock anything in. The NRL Grand Final and the October long weekend both fall inside the fortnight, which makes roads, venues and attractions busier on those days.

Ideas

Where to go and what to do

Parks, trails and open space

Western Sydney Parklands, Parramatta Park, the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan and Sydney Olympic Park all have room to run, plus destination playgrounds run by local councils.

Wildlife and animals

The west has well-known zoos and wildlife parks. Go early on a weekday for the shortest queues.

Museums, galleries and theatres

Most run holiday programs. They are a good plan for wet or very hot days.

Water and aquatic centres

Council pools and aquatic centres across the region run holiday sessions.

Free council and library programs

Blacktown, Parramatta, Penrith, Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown and Hawkesbury councils all publish free and low-cost activities each break.

Picnics

A picnic at a big regional park is the cheapest full day out there is.

Staying sane

Four ways to survive the fortnight

01

Plan the middle weekdays

Tuesday to Thursday is consistently the quietest stretch for anything popular.

02

Count the travel time

The west is big. One area per day beats three attractions in three directions.

03

Keep the cost down

Mix one paid day with free parks, libraries and council programs.

04

Go early

Arrive at opening, leave after lunch and beat both the crowds and the meltdowns.

Holiday parties

Catering a holiday party or community event

School holidays are prime party time, because it is the one fortnight everyone is available. Kids' birthdays, family gatherings and church and community events all cluster into these two weeks.

A food truck suits them well. The truck parks at your place, cooks to order and leaves with its own rubbish. Children eat earlier and faster than adults, so a shorter, front-loaded service window usually works best.

To be clear, Freak Eats does not trade at the zoos, parks or attractions in this guide. We work by private booking at your site, plus a few public dates listed on our events page.
